Key Features and Specifications
Pressure wash reels play a crucial role in managing and organizing hoses for efficient cleaning operations. Understanding the key features and specifications of pressure wash reels is essential for selecting the right equipment that meets your specific cleaning needs. Below we will explore the important features and specifications to consider when choosing a pressure wash reel, helping you make an informed decision for optimal operational performance.

Hose Capacity & Hose Type
One of the primary considerations when choosing a pressure wash reel is its hose capacity. The reel drum should possess sufficient capacity to accommodate the length and diameter (bore) of the hose you intend to use. Consider the maximum hose length and diameter that the reel can hold comfortably. For instance, all our reels are pressure and bore rated; ask your local Kiowa branch for more details. By selecting a reel with adequate hose capacity, you can ensure the reel offers smooth operation, prevents hose kinking, and can be conveniently stored. Due to the 4-digit pressures emitted by pressure washers, choosing quality and well-constructed hoses for your reel assembly is paramount. As part of the Alfagomma Group, and in partnership with Alfagomma Kiowa provides an extensive range of suitable pressure wash hoses that have the correct bend radius and pressure ratings for full integration with Ramex hose reels. We strongly recommend that for any industrial application you look to purchase a fully integrated reeling system to ensure reel, fittings, and hose are compatible and compliant with current legislation. There has been countless instances across UK industries of mis marrying hose and reels with often potentially catastrophic consequences, leading to significant financial penalties.
Pressure Rating
Pressure wash reels come with specific pressure ratings that indicate their capability to handle different levels of water pressure. All our reel data sheets explicitly specify individual reel capabilities, and our reel consultants can also support you through this process. To prevent potential hose destruction or risk to life and property, it is essential to select a reel and hose that will withstand the maximum pressure output of your pressure washing unit. Ensure that the pressure rating of the reel matches or exceeds the operating pressure of your pressure washer system. This ensures safe and efficient operation without the risk of hose bursts or leaks. Remember pressure washer hoses can emit pressures in the region of 2000 to 7000psi; human skin can be easily penetrated at just 100psi.
Swivel Options
Swivel functionality is a crucial feature in pressure wash reels as it allows for easy hose unwinding and prevents twisting or tangling. At Kiowa we always recommend looking for reels with swivel fittings that rotate freely, enabling smooth hose extension and retraction. A swivel feature ensures flexibility and reduces strain on the hose, enhancing overall performance and longevity. Consider swivel options that provide 360-degree rotation for maximum manoeuvrability. We find operators will always benefit and appreciate the flexibility swivel brackets offer, and actively encourage our clients to adopt swivel brackets across their portfolio.
Reel Construction Materials
The construction materials of the pressure washer reel significantly impact its durability and longevity, especially when you consider the enhanced risk of corrosion pressure washer reels attract. Subsequently, we always recommend you opt for reels made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, or heavy-duty plastics. These materials offer resistance to corrosion, rust, and air borne environmental toxins. Additionally, ensure that the reel components, including the drum, hub, and mounting brackets, are sturdy and well-built to withstand the rigors of daily use. It’s also crucial that the hose assembly used in conjunction with the reel drum offers superior resistance to the elements. For instance, choosing a hose with stainless steel fittings and UV resistance will increase the longevity and life-time value of your reeling system. Early investment in quality reeling materials will always pay off in the long run. Whilst we offer a range of options to suit all budgets, many of our clients are turning to reel solutions with a heavier initial financial outlay but in exchange they receive a significant return on reeling investment, with reduced reel breakdowns and enhanced reel runtimes.
Features and Accessories
We offer several pressure wash reel accessories to enhance functionality and ease of use. Some common additional features include adjustable tension control, automatic hose locking, integrated nozzle holders, and various mounting options. For instance, the adjustable tension control feature allows you to customize retraction speed of the hose. Whilst this in principle is fairly easy to set, you must aways consider the hose weight, hose length and drum circumference to ensure retraction motion is safe in terms of rotating at an appropriately steady recoil speed. Hose locks or ratchet systems will secure the hose at the desired length during dispensing and operation. Most locks come with a max load rating, but it’s always best to talk to your Kiowa reels consultant if your unsure about the locking load your reel can handle. Integrated nozzle holders provide convenient storage for spray nozzles, and we can also offer several high-pressure lances and Dinga gun accessories.
Installation and Mounting Options
Installing and mounting a pressure wash reel properly is essential for its safe and efficient operation. Understanding the installation and mounting options available for pressure wash reels is crucial to ensure a secure and convenient setup that maximizes functionality. Although Kiowa does not offer installation services, our in-house engineers are always happy to provide advice and guidance when it comes to best practice installation. Here we’ll explore several different installation and mounting methods, making considerations for each option, and assessing guidelines for proper installation, helping you make informed installation decisions for seamless pressure wash reel integration. Remember even if you have located the perfect surface to affix your mounting bracket onto, basic installation considerations should also encompass swivel bracket freedom and the locations ability to accommodate correct pay-out positioning.

Wall-Mounting
Wall-mounting is a popular option for installing pressure wash reels, providing a space-saving and organized solution. When considering wall-mounting, ensure that you have a sturdy, and flat surface available, such as a wall or vertical structure. Consider also the substrate composition of your wall i.e. is it easily permeable to water and does it have a load baring weight; some of our mountable reels can way in excess of 150kg. Whilst standard fixed mounting brackets/plates are typically included with our pressure wash reels, please always check the mounting specifications on the data sheet of the reel you’re considering or if not available consult with your local Kiowa branch to ensure secure and correct installation can be achieved. As a general guide, we always recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for appropriate reel mounting, using only the specified tools and wall fixings to guarantee proper alignment and anchoring.
Floor-Mounting
Floor-mounting is a suitable option when wall space is limited, where flexibility in reel positioning is desired or where reels are too heavy for suspension off the ground. To floor-mount a pressure wash reel, ensure you have a stable, and level, surface available, such as a concrete or steel floor. Many of the reels we supply in partnership with Ramex Reels come with pre-drilled mounting holes or a mounting plate that can be affixed to the floor using appropriate fixings. Always consider the reel’s total weight with hose and media within, to ensure the anticipated load does not exceed load baring weight of suspended floors and the reel assembly can be appropriately anchored, especially where rotating vibration may occur during heavy and fast dispensing and recoil.
Trailer & Vehicle Mounting
Trailer & Vehicle mounting is commonly employed in mobile pressure washing applications, where the pressure washer reel needs to be easily transported between different job sites. Trailer-mounted reels are typically secured using mounting brackets or welded supports, and it’s also important to consider the pulling forces exerted on mobile mounted reeling systems when hoses are fully extended. For instance, additional counter weights or enhanced braking systems may be required dependent on the size of the reel system employed. Ensure that the trailer is structurally sound and capable of supporting the reel’s weight, we generally recommend dual axle trailers and vehicles with a minimum payload of 2 tonnes for our larger reels range. Use appropriate hardware and reinforcement to ensure a secure attachment that withstands vibrations and movement during transportation and hose dispensing. Our team can also offer engine driven reel systems for big bore reeling systems, with geared multi hose dispensing systems that can be tailored to your specific requirements.
Ceiling-Mounting
Ceiling-mounting is an alternative option for situations where wall or floor space is limited, or when overhead storage is desired. We cannot stress enough with ceiling mounted reels how important it is that you seek professional advice before moving ahead with a ceiling mounted solution. Not only is it vital to consider the weight of the ceiling mounted unit but forces exerted by operator and the high-pressures going through the reeling system can attract serious implications when it’s comes to inappropriate ceiling mounted reel selection. Ceiling-mounted reels utilize brackets or hanging systems specifically designed for overhead installation and will all have very specific parameters for correct configuration, hence relying on specialist advice is a total necessity here. Before choosing this option, you must assess the ceiling’s structural integrity and weight-bearing capacity to ensure it can support the reel’s weight. In any case also follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and consult with reel professionals to ensure a safe and secure ceiling-mounted setup.
Further Considerations and Guidelines
When installing and mounting a pressure wash reel, keep the following considerations and guidelines in mind:
Adequate Space
Ensure sufficient space around the reel for easy hose access, operation, and maintenance. This will of course vary by reel application and style but in pressure wash applications we would particularly recommend a 180-degree clearance around the reel outlet spanning a 5-meter radius.
Accessibility
Install the reel in a location that provides convenient access to a water supply and power source where applicable. Remember that reels should be accessible to people with a range of heights and mobility limitations. Many pressure washing reels are often mounted so low that operators sustain injuries exerting extra force pulling them upwards over a sustained period of time. Ideally reels will be located so that minimal force need be exerted to dispense the hose from the drum and capitalising on gravity can play a useful part in this process.
Hose Length
Choose a mounting option that accommodates the length of the hose you will be using, preventing kinks or restrictions. Some of our reels can easy handle 100m lengths of hose whilst others, particularly where bore size is large, will be limited to 15m. Considering the length of hose you require will be the first step to determining which reel styles and sizes are potentially open to serving your specific requirements.
Correct Alignment
Ensure the reel is aligned correctly to prevent hose tangling, twisting, or uneven retraction. To assist with this, Kiowa also offers several 360-degree roller guide solutions that can be fully integrated into the payout assembly. Not only do roller guides support with easy flow dispensing but they also alleviate unnecessary hose cover abrasion and improve automatic recoil effectiveness.
Hose Management and Retraction
Effective hose management and retraction are essential aspects of using pressure wash reels to ensure smooth operation, prevent damage, and maintain a safe working environment. In this formal discussion, we will explore key considerations and best practices for managing and retracting hoses with pressure wash reels. Understanding proper hose handling techniques, retraction mechanisms, and safety measures will help optimize productivity and prolong the lifespan of your pressure wash equipment.

Dispensing (Unwinding)
When unwinding the hose from the reel, avoid sudden pulls, jerks, or yanks: instead, grasp the hose firmly near the payout head and pull the hose gently through the roller guides allowing it to unwind smoothly. By handling the hose in this manner, you can help to prevent kinking, twisting, or damage. Where possible try to avoid allowing the hose to drag against the floor or other abrasive surfaces. Whilst we do offer anti abrasion jet washing covers, it’s good to avoid unnecessary drag or snagging and a well-designed reeling system will help you achieve this.
Positioning
Ensure the hose is positioned correctly during use to avoid potential tripping hazards or interference with other equipment. Allowing the hose to sit flush on the ground once dispensed to the required length can help to mitigate trips and unintended bodily contact, vehicle collision, and unsupported hose media.
Avoiding Obstacles
Take care to avoid sharp edges, corners, or obstacles that may cause abrasion or lacerations to the hose wall. Inspect the work area and remove any potential hazards before operating the pressure wash reel. Always ensure pressure wash lances are stored safely and not left unattended in high-traffic areas.
Minimizing Tension
To avoid excessive tension on the hose during use ensure the hose is not suspended unnecessarily off the ground by retracting the coil fully for full ground to hose contact. Excessive tension can lead to premature wear, strain on the reel’s components, and reduce efficiency. Maintain a smooth, controlled flow of water through the hose, and be sure to drain the line of excess media where the reel is to be left dormant for significant periods of time.
Retraction Mechanisms
Spring-Driven Retraction: Many pressure wash reels feature a spring-driven retraction mechanism, such as Ramex’s Slow Retraction Fully Integrated Technology. When releasing the hose, retraction mechanism springs will automatically rotate the drum of the reel in a controlled manner, recoiling the hose at the speed set during configuration; always consult your supplier for correct configuration of slow retraction systems. By using a slow retraction system, you can ensure fast and effective hose storage, extending the lifespan of the hose and limiting strain on operators during the recoil process.
Manual Retraction
Some smaller pressure wash reels may still require manual retraction. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper retraction techniques: this will ensure the recoil process does not incorrectly overlap or the operator finds themselves exerting unnecessary force that could affect their physical wellbeing. Above all, always slowly and evenly guide the hose back onto the reel, ensuring it is not tangled or twisted during the process, and that you adapt the correct posture to mitigate against physical injury.
Safety Measures
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): when operating pressure wash reels always wear appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing. Adopting these safety measures will help protect personnel against potential injuries from pressurized water, chemicals, or debris. Many pressure wash reels are equipped with a locking mechanism to secure the hose at a desired length during use. Always Engage the lock when the desired hose length is reached to prevent accidental retraction or hose recoil.
Inspection and Maintenance
Regularly inspect the hose for wear, leaks, or damage and replace any worn or damaged hoses promptly to prevent accidents or diminished performance. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines for the pressure wash reel to ensure optimal functionality. Kiowa can support with on-site hose inspections, hose replacement, and reel servicing where required.
